Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis is a slow, and progressive disease of lipid accumulation in the arterial wall. Atherosclerosis is the deposition of lipid (fat substances) in the subintima (just beneath the most inner layer) of the wall of blood vessels. Predisposing factors: - Hereditary: a familial tendency is usually present. - Age: the incidence and severity of atherosclerosis increases with the advancement of age. - Diet: excess intake of animal fat increases the risk of having the diseases. - Sex: atherosclerosis is more common in males. Estrogen in females decreases the risk up to the age of menopause. -Lipid profile: High levels of the Low density lipoproteins (LDL) is linked with higher risk of having atherosclerosis. On the other hand the High density lipoproteins (HDL) plays a protective role against having the disease. - Smoking: increases the risk of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart diseases (IHD). -Alcohol intake: also plays a
